NEUTRAL SCENES

The series is based on image material taken from old photo novel magazines from the 1960s, 70s and 80s, which I found on flea markets in Istanbul, Barcelona, Beirut and Paris. I exaggerated the pathetic visual language and narcissistic self-referentiality of the characters by reproducing, reassembling and painting over the original images with black permanent marker. By erasing wide parts of the depicted situations I isolated the protagonists and took away their speech bubbles. No longer interactive and separated from their original story they appear as narrative fragments gesticulating into the void. Central in each work is the egocentric attitude of the persons, their lack of true relationship, their inner drama, stereotypic role models and respective gestures.
